World: Asia: Afghanistan: Maiwand
Village in Afghanistan, fifty miles northwest of Candahar. The British were defeated here on July 27, 1880 after they sent a force out from Candahar to stop Ayub Khan, the insurrectionist brother of the emir of Afghanistan. [JT]STUD: Watson served at the Battle of Maiwand, where he was "struck on the shoulder by a Jezail bullet."
