World: Europe: Britain: England: The Downs

The name given to the treeless upland extending from the center of Hampshire across the length of Sussex.
[JT]

LION: Holmes: "My villa is situated upon the souther slope of the Downs, commanding a great view of the Channel. At this point the coast-line is entirely of chalk cliffs, which can only be descended by a single, long, tortuous path, which is steep and slippery."

VALL: Birlstone was located near the northern chalk downs.

Holmes has "definitely retired from London" and has taken himself "to bee-farming on the Sussex Downs" at the time SECO was published.
