World: Europe: Britain: London: Lloyd'sA shipping association whose headquarters are in the Royal Exchange in London. Originally a coffeehouse gathering of merchants for business and gossip maintained by an Edward Lloyd (circa 1700), which gradually became one of the greatest organizations in the world in connection with commerce. According to the 1871 acto fo incorporation, the main objects for which the society exists are the carrying out of the business of marine insurance; the portection of the interests of the members; and the collection, publication, and diffusion of intelligence and information with respect to shipping.
