World: Asia: Tibet: LhassaThe capital of Tibet. est. pop. 10,000 [1901] and center of Lamaism Buddhism. Visited by thousands of pilgrims from China, Turkestan and Nepal. In the late 18th century a law was established prohibiting (western) foreigners from entering the city, which was not broken until it was entered by British forces in 1904.
