World: Asia: Persia

A kingdom of south-western Asia, est. pop. over 9,000,000 [1901]. [JT]

EMPT: After visiting Tibet, Holmes travelled here during the Great Hiatus. Coincidentally, Col. Sebastian Moran's father had once been the British minister of Persia. Holmes also kept his tobacco in a Persian slipper.

Holmes: "I then passed through Persia, looked in at Mecca and paid a short but interesting visit to the Khalifa at Khartoum, the results of which I have communicated to the Foreign Office."

IDEN: Holmes quotes a Persian saying which he attributed to Hafiz:"There in danger for him who taketh the tiger cub, and danger also for whoso snatches a delusion from a woman."
