How do I subscribe to the 4AD-L mailing list?
Send a message to listserv@listserv.american.edu. The body should of the message should contain:
SUBSCRIBE 4AD-L FirstName LastName
where you replace "FirstName LastName" with your real name (not your e-mail address). You should hear back from the list server pretty quickly with a welcoming form letter. You'll need to confirm your subscription, but instructions for this are in the form letter.

How do I post a message to the list?
Send your message to 4ad-l@listserv.american.edu and it will go to everyone on the list. On most mail systems, replying to a message from the list should automatically direct it there. (Watch out when replying directly to the sender that you don't accidentally send to the whole list!).

I sent a message to the list but never saw it in the mail. Did it get posted?
Don't worry, normally the list-server does not send your own messages back to you unless you receive the list as a digest. If you do want to see your messages, set the REPRO option (see next question...)

How do I unsubscribe, turn off my mail whilst I'm on vacation, or receive mail in daily digest form?
Send another message to the list server. The body of the message should contain a command:

  1. To unsubscribe:

    SIGNOFF 4AD-L
  2. To get mail in daily-digest form:

    SET 4AD-L DIGEST
  3. To put mail on hold:

    SET 4AD-L NOMAIL
  4. To return to getting mail, one message at a time:

    SET 4AD-L MAIL
  5. To receive copies of your own messages:

    SET 4AD-L REPRO
  6. To not receive copies of your own messages:

    SET 4AD-L NOREPRO
For full details, consult the list server message you got when you first subscribed. The manual is also available in a number of formats from the software company.

HELP! I've tried to unsubscribe using the method above and it doesn't work.
This can happen if the current return address of your unsubscribe message is not the same as the address you subscribed with, i.e. if your mail system has been tweaked slightly since you subscribed. Here's what you do next, courtesy of Dr Bruce Scott:

  1. Send mail to the listserver with no subject line, and the single line

    REVIEW 4AD-L
    in the body.

  2. You will get a file back with the list of 4AD-L subscribers. Search that list for your name to find out what address you originally subscribed under.

  3. If that address is still your current address, send another message to the above listserv address, no subject line, with the single line:

    SIGNOFF 4AD-L
    in the body.

  4. If that address is not your current address, you can get your sysop to send the unsubscribe command for you. You need the node administrator (your sysop) to use the single line command (as above):

    FOR username SIGNOFF 4AD-L
This type of command must be sent from user@node, where user is maint, postmast, or postmaster.

  5. Another option, for those that use a POP mail client such as Eudora or Netscape to read their mail, is to alter the "return address" setting to match the old address under which you're subscribed, and then send another signoff command from the faked return address. Don't forget to change the return address back afterwards.

  6. If you don't have the ability to forge a return address (probably not if you read mail from a Unix shell account) you may know someone who does; in that case they can do the previous step for you by temporarily changing their return address to be your subscription address. The response from the listserv will come back to you, of course, not them, since they're pretending to be you.

  7. For further information on listserv commands, send mail to the listserv address with the single line:

    INFO REFCARD

I've stopped receiving mail from the list, but I neither unsubscribed nor put a hold on my mail. What gives?
We've seen this problem numerous times before. You either stop receiving mail, are randomly unsubscribed from the list and/or options are screwed up. But it could also be that there's a problem with mail distribution between american.edu and your internet service provider - as you know, the Internet is notoriously unreliable at times.

Please avoid sending "is the mailing list OK?" messages to the list itself, as that certainly won't diagnose the problem. Instead, we'd sugggest as a first measure you send the following two commands to the list server. Send an email to listserv@listserv.american.edu with the following text in the body of the message:

SET 4AD-L NOMAIL
SET 4AD-L DIGEST
END
Looks strange, but it somehow makes sense to the listserver. If you don't receive a reply from the listserver within 24 hours, then it could be that either the connection has failed or the listserver is "down". In this case, contact the list administrators at 4ad-l@state51.co.uk who might know if there's problems at the American University end.

Alternatively, if you receive a message back saying you are unsubscribed, you should send the command REVIEW 4AD-L to the listserver. You'll receive a list back of all the subscribers. Look through this list to see if your entry exists or not. If not, simply resubscribe yourself.

If you find your name in the list of subscribers, your outgoing mail address is probably incorrect. In this case send a message to the list administrators who should be able to correct your subscription address.

If all else fails, can I talk to a real human about my subscription?
The administrators of the list are Mark von Minden and David Thorpe. If you have administraton queries please contact them through the address 4ad-l@state51.co.uk. Avoid sending "please unsubscribe me" messages directly to the list - it's a complete waste of time, as apart from the administrators, no-one there will be able to help.

Are there archives of previous months' postings?
The official archives of messages for the past nine months (or so) are held by the list server machine at american.edu (East coast USA). These archives are indexed by date, author and thread, and can be searched. Some other archives exist around the world, but tend to be patchy or not working correctly. An edited archive classified by artist and label is available as part of this FAQ.
